Building a strong North Sea for 2030 and beyond

Offshore wind energy is growing at an incredible pace, but our infrastructure and the electrification of consumers are struggling to keep up. As we prepare for significant offshore capacity expansions, the fast-approaching 2030 and 2050 deadlines demand urgent action. How can we ensure that the North Sea is equipped for this massive growth?

In an increasingly competitive global market, it’s crucial to keep the North Sea at the forefront of offshore development. Challenges such as grid congestion, reliance on private investment over subsidies, and mismatched supply chain scaling must be addressed with innovation and collaboration. To meet these challenges head-on, Europe needs to stay nimble and inventive.

Are you ready to help shape the future of Europe’s offshore sector? Be part of the solution by joining the discussion at Offshore Industry! Let’s build the blue battery of Europe together.

Programme 2024

The schedule for Offshore Industry

11.00 Reception & Registration

Welcome by moderator Bert van der Lingen, Vice-Chair, NedZero

How is Europe doing with competition from both China, the US, and other players in the global offshore wind market? Can the old continent hold on to its leadership position through innovation and overcoming system integration issues, or will we be overwhelmed by industrial capacity from abroad?

Listen to the following experts to get an overview of where Europe stands now:

  • Michal Meidan, Director China Energy Programme, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies
  • Ana Catarina Simões, Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre

Netcongestion, capacity issues, and lagging offtake of offshore electricity are hampering the development and exploitation of wind farms. Outside of laying more and bigger cables, what else can we do to get energy to the consumer directly or indirectly?

Let’s find out together with a panel comprised of the following experts:

  • Kristian Borum Jørgensen, CEO, Maersk Stillstrom
  • Ruben Dijkstra, Managing Director Benelux, Ørsted
  • Marco Waas, Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer, Nobian
  • David Zenner, Chief Assets Officer, Elia Group

13.10 Networking Lunch

Quiet construction of removable monopiles? See how this entrepreneur is making offshore construction easier and more compliant with environmental regulation!

  • Stas Verichev, CEO, Vibrotwist

With government subsidies in the wind sector coming to an end, how will business cases change to incorporate exclusively using the private financial markets? Can Europe compete with other regions where there is more government intervention? Will the lack of government support mean a slowing in the development of offshore wind?

  • Jasper Vis, Country Manager Netherlands, SSE Renewables
  • Stefan Hogewoning, Executive Director Renewable Energy Project Finance, Rabobank
  • Barbara Zuiderwijk, Founder, Green Giraffe

15.20 Coffee Break

From foundations to cables, monopiles, blades, construction ships, maintenance vessels, and beyond, segments all develop at different speeds. Yet, their combined success is the only way a market can sustainably grow. How can we make the whole supply chain grow at the same time, and make them communicate their ambitions in time to one another?

  • Arnoud Kuis, Managing Director Offshore Energy, Van Oord
  • Sjouke Pieter Bootsma, Director Supply Chain Management, TenneT
  • Rafaël Iemants, Managing Director, Smulders

16.50 Wrapping up and Networking drinks with Student Speeddates
